Altamont Head Start Children Learn About Emergency Services

Melissa Scissom from the local emergency services gave Head Start pre-schoolers a tour of an ambulance during regular classes at the Altamont Head Start Center. Ms Scissom’s visit was one of several visits to the center by as the children studied the overall topic of community workers.

Learn About Community

Winter may have settled in on the mountaintop, but that’s not stopped children at the Altamont Head Start Center from keeping busy – thanks to the help of community workers the children have been studying as part of their preparation for kindergarten.

“Members of our local emergency service, including Melissa Scissom and Preston Miller, came to visit us,” explained Head Start lead teacher Sonya King. She said the emergency technicians gave the children an onboard tour of the ambulance and showed the children what tools they use to save lives. “The children were so excited,” said Mrs. King, “and they learned so much.”

Just after the middle of January, Grundy County Sheriff Brent Myers and officers Chris Boyd and Lonnie Cleek came to the school to tell the children about police services. Sheriff Boyd spoke with each of the two classes at the Center, and then fingerprinted each child. “The children absolutely loved this!” Mrs. King said. She said the children were able to have a close look at the police vehicles, and even turn on the siren. “We are very thankful our community cares so much about educating young people,” Mrs. King

added.

Late in January, the Head Start Center hosted father figures – fathers, uncles, grandfathers (even some mothers where Dads were not available) – for a special day of recognition. “We got all the guys we could and had a ‘Daddy Day,’” said Mrs. King. “It was a huge success. They built bird houses with the children, then painted them. Many of the fathers took off from work just to be with their children on this special day.”
