… are our children and their families. While not every child in our program will enter public school with every skill described in our educational performance measures, our typically developing children will all have the capacity to do well in school. Furthermore, most of those who are not typically developing will be able to continue the work they began at Head Start with a confidence born in an educational setting that nurtures all children in a developmentally appropriate, rich learning environment staffed with loving, well-trained adults. — Head Start Director Judy Graham |

Our Best Outcomes ... |

We are glad to say we are doing unusually well, a fact that we attribute to the children, of course, but to their parents, as well, most of whom are deeply involved in the lives of their children. We know that counts for more than anything. But we also attribute our children’s success to our dedicated staff, who labor daily to understand where each child is, and then push them forward.
The graph above indicates the progress our children made during the first half of the 2007-08 year, a typical year at Head Start. The dashed line indicates the progress made by a typical pre-schooler anywhere in America. As you can see, our children (even though they begin the year significantly below the national averages) make significantly more progress than the typical American pre-schooler. How much more is indicated by the height of the balloon above the dashed line. On average, our children make more progress during the year than two-thirds of the preschoolers in America.
If you want to talk about real progress, this is it.
One way we make that progress possible is by consistent attention to detail. For the past six years, Tennessee’s Head Start classrooms have been examined by professional evaluators. Our centers have ranked consistently higher. In fact, averaged over six years, Sequatchie Valley Head Start’s classrooms have the highest average rating of any Head Start program in Tennessee. The chart below documents that fact. |

The LAP-D is the major assessment we use to tell how our children are doing. Its special value lies in the fact that it is “nationally normed,” which means we can use it to see how our children are doing compared with other children in the U.S. |
